Proverbs 31 Woman: Part 1

A Wife of Biblical Character
An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.

The word excellent is translated by NASB version. Other translations may use the word noble or virtuous. The Hebrew text is chayil which denotes strength, power, dominance, and even wealth. This wife is strong in character and convictions. She is compared to jewels as rare and precious.

11The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.

She is trustworthy. Her labor compliments her husband.

12She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Her motives are pure. Her spirit is kind. Her character is steady. She is dependable.

Can this apply to a diversity of women today? Absolutely. Today we there are women married, single, young, and old. Some with kids. Some without. Some who work outside the home. Some who are stay-at-home moms. The biblical ideal of womanhood is a woman of strong character. She is dignified. She uses her many talents. She is trustworthy with finances. Kind. Compassionate. Sensitive to the needs of others. She is her own identity, not someone who hides in the shadow of her husband. Rather, she partners with him.
